The newly renovated Hanwell Community Centre is open for business with many rooms having undergone makeovers and complete refits to the showers, toilets and entrance hall. A variety of rooms are available for hire: a suite of rooms, sports halls, meeting rooms, offices and workshops.
People of all ages, gender and ethnicity use the Centre to relax in and learn together in harmony; a clear indication of Hanwell Community Centre's success as a modern dynamic Community Centre of the 21st Century. Badminton, Judo, Pottery, Tap Dance, Thai Boxing, Upholstery and Yoga groups all run regular classes. If you would like to book a room or start a class or group please contact us.
The Centre is housed in all that remains of the Central London District Schools (known locally as The Cuckoo School) a poor law school, built in 1856 for the children of destitute families and orphans as a place to live and learn. Its most famous pupil was Charlie Chaplin. The school closed in 1935 and the building was later taken over by The Hanwell Community Association and who has leased the building ever since, becoming Hanwell Community Centre Ltd in 1992.
In the late 1960s four of Britain's most famous rock bands The Who, Uriah Heep, Deep Purple and Led Zeppelin all rehearsed here.
The Centre has been a regular location for many popular TV series and played a pivotal part in the feature film "Billy Elliot" in the year 2000.
