Hanwell Community Centre has long been used as a location for Film and Television.
In 2000 Film Director Stephen Daldry chose the Sports Hall as the location for the Boxing Gym and Ballet Studio in the film Billy Elliot. In the scenes filmed here Billy, played by Jamie Bell, stays behind after boxing and is won over to ballet after watching the teacher Mrs Wilkinson, played by Julie Walters, with her class of girls. See if you can spot the Sports Hall in the trailer for Billy Elliot below.
Scenes from TV series Only Fools and Horses, Midsomer Murders, Jemima Shaw Investigates, Ultimate Force, Bergerac, Rumble, Prisoners of Conscience, The Inspector Alleyn Mysteries and New Tricks, have also been shot here.
In the episode, Cash and Curry from Only Fools and Horses, first shown in September 1981, the columned façade doubles as The Peckham & Camberwell Chamber of Trade's dinner/dance.
